LARGE SCALE TOY SOLDIER GUIDE

The term, “toy soldier,“ can apply to miniatures of any size, but I think most people picture this particular scale. Their large size (54mm-60mm tall) and construction (plastic) makes them more suited for children. Babyboomers will think fondly of this sale as it was most popular among children of the 1950s and 60s. These relatively large models are better suited to skirmish-level wargames which require fewer figures on the table.

1/32 (54mm)
Typically these are sold unpainted. Visit The Michigan Toy Soldier Company for photos of these plastic miniatures.

A Call to Arms
A popular model company form the 1960s, Atlantic produced a line of Romans. They are sought after by collectors, but I really don't care for the awkward sculpting and inaccurate equipmanet.

Atlantic
This English company has a nice set of Imperial Roman Legionaries. For some reason these aren't listed on their website, but they are available from Michtoy.com

Classic Toy Soldier Company
CTS fill in the gaps in HAT's Carthaginian wars line. Republican Romans: There are mail-clad princeps (also can be used for soldiers of Caesar's time), an officer and a standard bearer. Carthaginians: Includes Celt-Iberians an officer and a standard bearer.

HAT
If you are into Republican or Imperial Rome this is your company. Their focus is 1/72 (HO) scale, but they have taken several of these lines and produced them in 54mm.

Italeri
Imperial Romans: A VERY nice set. Includes a standard bearer and trumpeter in addition to a fine looking infantry. Gauls/Celts: This set has a great variety of poses including a wild boar standard bearer and a trumpeter. They also sell a couple gladiator sets.

Marx
THE plastic toy soldier manufacturer of the mid-20th century. Imperial Romans: This company relesed an excellent Ben Hur playset. It is full of gladiators, charioteers, towns people, etc. Only two of the poses could be considered part of a Roman Legion. A few of the fuigures can easily be converted and used as slingers. Vikings: With an addition of an oval or hexagonal shield they can be Gauls or Germans.

Toyway
In 2002 the Toyway company (from China I think) began producing a nice line of painted plastic Romans. they also produce Greeks and Egyptians. Many toy soldier sellers are catagorizing them as "Timpo" figures.

60 - 70mm
These plastic figures are the safest size for children- non toxic, no sharp edges or small pieces to swallow.

Bully
Intended for children, these sturdy soft plastic 70mm figures are quite nice. A good companion to Papo, though slightly inferior. Bully produces a Roman guard tower too! Bully produces no enemies for their Romans to fight, but Papo does have a nice line of Guals. Sold pre-painted.

Jecsan
These were originally were produced in europe in the 1960s, but you can buy recasts made from the original molds. Often cast in maetallic bronze color plastic, they are all sculpted quite well and come in a variety of action-packed poses. Imperial Romans: These figures are decpicting in the style of the Romans found on Trajan's Column. There are infantry, cavalry, an emperor figure, Roman woman, senator, and a standard bearer. Vikings: Although meant for later times, these vikings can easily pass for a Roman-era barbarians.

Marx
Marx was THE toy soldier company of the 1950s and 1960s. There are only 6 poses of these Romans. They go well with both Reamsa and Jecsan.

Italeri
Intended for young children, these sturdy pre-painted soft plastic 70mm figures are quite nice. A good companion to Bully. Legionaries, Caesar, Chariot, Guals.

Preisler Elastolin
Painted plastic. This company has been around for decades. The arms and equipment displayed on their models is now historically inaccurate. Preiser Elastolin also produced an odd 40mm size of Romans.

Reamsa
Imperial Romans: The Reamsa Romans are the perfect companions to Jecsan. They are the same height, with just a bit more detail. In fact, it is easy to mix up the two. The bases of the Jescan figures slope more. In addition to that there Gladiators, and 2 chariots with drivers available. They are supposed to be Charleton Hestons's character from Ben Hur and his opponent.

Timpo
Now out of business. Timpo toy soldiers were notable in their construction. They were assembled from various colors of plastic which gave the impression of being painted.

Recomended Seller

The Michigan Toy Soldier Company Sells 20, 54, and 60mm plastic and metal figures. No 28mm figures, though. They also have good diorama supplies. Great website to use if you want to see photos.
