My Diorama Shelf

April 17, 2008

To display my painted models I have built a diorama shelf. The base is a piece of MDF board cut to fit the space. I used painted canvas as the background.

I’m building a scale model of a Roman signal tower. The walls are foam core. The tile roof is made of corrugated cardboard with the facing paper removed. The doors and wood planking are made from the wooden box of brie cheese! The hand rails are balsa wood strips from the hobby shop. Completing hand rail on all four sides took me 4 hours! As a reference I am using Peter Connolly’s illustration found in The Cavalryman. I finished building about a year ago, stopping to work on other projects. When I take it up again my next step will be to make a walled enclosure with bamboo skewers. The entire structure will rest on a sheet of stryofoam insulation, with a circular ditch cut in.
