ANCIENT ERA TOY SOLDIERS and WARGAMES

Toys soldiers, or “historic miniatures,” have existed since ancient times. Sculpture painting was a highly regarded profession in classical times. Ancient Greek and Roman statues are typically pictured as pristine white marble. Historically these were art objects almost always painted in bright, sometimes gaudy colors. I like to think that this ancient tradition of painted sculpture continues in the humble hobby of tabletop wargaming. Here are photos of various miniatures I have painted.

For the study of painted classical sculpture see the recent exhibition at Harvard’s Sackler Museum: Gods in Color: Painted Sculpture of Classical Antiquity and article in The Boston Globe. There was also a book published, Gods in Color : Painted Sculpture of Classical Antiquity, by Vinzenz Brinkmann, et. al. 2007. Also see: The Color of Life, by Roberta Pazanelli and Vinzenz Brinkmann.

Soon your 25-28mm Roman or Celtic army will have some inexpensive plastic options.
Wargames Factory
This (American?) company is creating a range of plastic late Republican Romans and Celts developed in conjunction with Osprey Publishing’s new wargame rules, Field of Glory. The "greens" look like some nice figures. The helmets on their Optio and Centurion look a little wonky, but that might be due to the limitations of plastic, rather than an uninformed sculptor. First release date is May 23, 2008.
Warlord Games
This UK company is selling 28mm plastic Early Imperial Romans and Celts. Excellent details, poses and accuracy. Release date May 12th. If you get a copy of the latest Wargames illustrated Magazine, there is a free sample included!

I added my Roman tower and diorama shelf to my list of projects (see menu at right).

I am sold more minis on eBay. I like The Wargames Market site, but it seems like everyone is selling and no one is buying!

February 22, 2008
I have moved over some Hobby Log entries overt to their own pages under “My Projects.” (look for the links in the right column on this page.)
I am not sure if I will get anything up for auction this weekend. I was just too busy this week to finish anything. Next weekend for sure.

I have painted 5 models to sell either on eBay or the The Wargames Market. eBay’s new seller fee structure is really going to take a chunk out of my meager proffit. So, I’d really like to try selling my stuff on The Wargames Market. A listing there will cost me a total of 5 cents! eBay’s fees will knock a $1.12 off my successful auction. That is a big deal when the item sells for only $10, and I still need to pay for the model’s initial cost, paint, and PayPal fee. Anyway, I’ve finished painting a drinking hobbit, a ram, some ancient Dacians, and a bear. I hope to paint some more villagers too.

Check out this exhibit on ancient painted sculpture at Harvard U.’s Arthur M. Sackler Museum.

I think I might start a proper blog for my miniature painting hobby. I would be interesting in seeing some visitor feedback, but my simple HTML skills prevent that from happening on this site.

I am still painting models for sale on eBay. I sold 8 out of 9 figures this past week, so it has proven to be worth the time. With the higher selling fee approaching, I think I might move my operation over to The Wargames Market. This is an auction site devoted to the hobby. I have one painted model for sale there now. You can do an advanced search by seller. My ID is ’OptioAndy’. We’ll see how it does.

I had intended to post some new models on eBay this weekend. Real work, however, got in the way of that plan. I do have a few new guys painted, but I think I will wait until there is a larger group before I put them up for sale. I finished the Grizzly bear, but I like the model so much I decided to keep him for myself! It looks like the Wargames Foundry is not selling that model anymore, so this made me want to keep him even more. As for my unfinished 15mm DBA army, that is going to be on the back burner for a while. I just don’t enjoy painting that scale. It seems more like a chore then fun!

I’d say my venture into selling painted models on eBay was a success. I sold 5 of the 10 models up for bid, raising some much-need funds for my hobby budget. I am currently painting a new round of models for sale. You can expect photos of a grizzly bear, pack mule, and a few more villagers soon. The previous models I painted can be viewed in the Historic gallery at the right.

December 31, 2007

On Saturday I posted ten models for sale on eBay.

I am painting some 28mm villagers to put for sale on eBay.

This group is almost ready. I just have to paint their bases and varnish. I expect I will have these on eBay by This Saturday, the 29th. The monk and the guy lugging the barrel are made by Old Glory Miniatures. The drunk fellow, ghost and executioner are made by Mega Miniatures.

This group has just been undercoated (with Humbrol matte black enamel paint). The sea captain is made by Mega Miniatures. The rest are Old Glory’s Revolting Peasants set.
