ONLINE FORUM

RomanArmy.com is an educational site featuring: an encyclopedia and glossary, an imagebase of Roman military gravestones (a unique resource for the web!), a travelogue, and bibliography of Roman military references.
Their forum, Roman Army Talk, is devoted to all subjects surrounding the Roman Legions: history, archaeology, reenactment, reconstruction, a market place and even a section on historical wargaming with toy soldiers. The forum is visited by the notables of Roman archaeology, so it is a great place to have your questions answered.

EDUCATIONAL SITES

Roman-Britain.org is an extensive site focused on all things Roman Britain.

Trajan's Column This site features over 500 close-up photos of the war with the Dacians depicted on the column.

The Roman Army By Gary Brueggeman is a very impressive site devoted to detailing the battle formations, and other organizational models of the Roman army. It is currently off line while the author develops his material for publication as a book.

Mike Bishop is an archaologist and author concerned with the equipment used by the Romans. He edits the Journal of Roman Military Equipment Studies. This is a good site to visit if you are want to get into this more specialized area of Roman legion history.

Simon James is an archaeologist, professor and author concerned with 3rd century AD Romans and the Celts. His site features an “essay presentation clinic” to help those needing to write the ideal school paper.

Hannibal Barca and the Punic Wars The Punic Wars is outside the scope of my site. So, if you are looking for a VERY comprehensive site on the subject. This is the place to go!

MUSEUMS

U. Penn The University of Pennsylvania has a museum on campus featuring Etruscan, Greek and Roman objects. Such a collection is quite rare compared to the museums of Europe. In their Roman collection is the Puteoli block, featuring a relief of a Praetroian with shield.

Butser Ancient Farm Butser Ancient Farm is a replica of the sort of farm which would have existed in the British Iron Age circa 300 BC. It is located at Petersfield in Hampshire, England. The site is open to the public. It features reconstructed Celtic and Roman buildings, maintains ancient animals and crops, and offers a number of educational courses. For those of us unable to visit the website offers great info on Celtic vernacular life.

Lejre Experimental Centre Similar to the Butser Farm above, this working farm in Denmark features reconstructions of Iron Age houses and agricultural implements, and it performs archaeology experiments.

Vindolanda This is the website for the acrhaeological site in Britain, once home to a fort of Roman auxiliaries. The place is famous for its finds of ancient letters writen by the soldiers who lived there.

MERCHANTS

Roman Glassmakers of Hampshire, UK specialize in making reproduction Roman glassware using ancient techniques. Their studio sell brilliant pieces that would be make interesting accents for any Romaphile’s home. Of particular interest are the gladiator and chariot race beakers.

Venetian Cat Studio produces historical reproduction pottery. Located in New Hampshire, USA.

Carnyx and Company has reproduced the ancient Celtic horn, the carnyx, and has released sound recordings.

Holger Ratsdorf of Germany produces high quality, meticulously researched Roman reproductions. From weapons to jewlery.
